From a small C-130 unit, a crew is formed to fly combat missions over Afghanistan through the course of a multi-month deployment. The crew was comprised of three commissioned officers: Major John Hammond, 1st Lt. Aiden Sheppard, 1st Lt. Daniel Carter, two non-commissioned officers: SSgt Sam McKay, SSgt Jonas Telford, and an airman: SrA Robert Ford. For all but one, this was their first deployment to Afghanistan. This is their story; a small perspective of a war that has endured for over a decade, and that is all but forgotten.

The story will follow their entire voyage, travelling from the United States to the warzone in Afghanistan. It will recount landings into austere Forward Operating Bases, the difficulties of being away from others, and the joy of finally putting years of training to the test during combat airdrops to resupply special operations task forces.

Balancing aviation lingo and military acronyms, Jack Nesigt provides a unique perspective into the War on Terror. He deftly explains the challenges of flying and the additional risks posed by combat, while keeping a pulse on the crews that fly these missions every single day, across the planet. Nesigt does not provide a political basis nor an opinion of the war or its merits, focusing instead on the events that took place and the crew’s life while in the battle zone.

While all names and location names have been changed for operational security reasons, all the events in this story are true, providing us a never before seen glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes of America’s longest war.

Note about the author:

Jack Nesigt (nom-de-plume) is a former C-130 aircrew member and combat veteran who has deployed multiple times to various areas of the world, including Middle East. The recipient of multiple Air Medals and other decorations, this aircrew member’s recap of only a few events in Afghanistan over a decade after the start of the war presents a glimpse into the challenges and successes members of our military face regardless of their responsibilities. He is also the author of a sequel to this story, The Larger Perspective, revealing how the decisions on where, when and who to send into the different Landing and Drop Zones of the world are made at the allied headquarters. Following his time in C-130s, Jack Nesigt was selected and assigned to a Special Operations unit in Florida, after which he resigned from his flying duties to transfer into America’s space program.
